Why Variety Might Be the Secret to Feeling Better

One of the things I love about FRESH. is the variety of classes available. Whether you enjoy yoga, strength training, kettlebells, Pilates, walking groups or something else entirely, each type of movement offers unique benefits.
The mistake many of us make is thinking we only need one type of exercise.
In reality, our bodies thrive on variety.
Some people have excellent flexibility and mobility but could benefit from building more strength and stability. Others are naturally strong but would benefit from improving their mobility, balance and body awareness.
Rather than asking which form of exercise is best, perhaps the better question is: What might be missing from my current routine?
The Benefits of Mobility and Flexibility
Classes such as yoga and Pilates can help improve flexibility, mobility, balance and body awareness. They encourage us to move through a greater range of motion, improve posture and often leave us feeling calmer and less stressed. For many people, these classes are an important part of maintaining both physical and mental wellbeing.
The Benefits of Strength Training
Strength training offers a different set of benefits. It helps build stronger muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons while improving stability and resilience throughout the body. Strength training can help us feel more confident in everyday life, whether that's carrying shopping, climbing stairs, lifting children or simply moving with greater ease. As we get older, maintaining strength becomes increasingly important for our long-term health and independence.

Recently, a Fresh member who regularly attended yoga classes decided to add two strength sessions into her week. She was already moving regularly and doing plenty of mobility work, but often experienced little aches, pains and niggles.
After a few months of strength training, many of those aches and pains had significantly reduced. It wasn't because yoga wasn't helping. It was because strength training provided something her body was missing: greater stability, resilience and support around her joints.
But It works both ways I've also seen the opposite.
People who regularly strength train often struggle with tight hips, stiff shoulders or reduced mobility. Adding activities such as yoga, stretching or Pilates can help improve movement quality, recovery and overall wellbeing.
Sometimes mobility is the missing piece.
Sometimes strength is.
Building a More Balanced Body The goal isn't to choose between strength and flexibility.
The goal is to create a body that is both strong and mobile. A body that can move well, feel supported and cope with the demands of everyday life. Different forms of exercise each bring something valuable to the table, which is why combining different styles of movement can be so beneficial.
My Final Thoughts
You don't need to do everything. But if you've been doing the same type of exercise for years, it may be worth asking yourself:
What might my body benefit from that I'm not currently doing?
Perhaps it's a Strength class. Perhaps it's yoga. Perhaps it's Pilates. The answer will be different for everyone. What matters most is finding a balance that helps you feel stronger, move better and enjoy life more.
